There’s No Turning Back Now…

I decided to convert a kitchen closet into a pantry. That was the original project for the week. However, when I ripped out the vinyl floor in the closet, there’s vintage, funky orange vinyl flooring below. The kind of flooring that everyone either had in their own home growing up in the 60’s or knows someone who did. My aunt had this flooring and I LOVE it. Eric and I are such vintage geeks, we would probably purchase this style of flooring new, today.

Now below this vintage flooring, is original wood floors. But they’re not in the best shape. We decide to move out the stove and do a test spot to see the floor’s condition. The cream-colored vinyl floor that is there now is hideous. In the top left picture below, the original floor we have now is not dirty. It’s all scratched, dented and stained. I’ve whined about how much I dislike this floor for four years. So in our “test spot” we discover that under the hideous vinyl flooring is a layer of cheap plywood! Then below that, is the vintage funky covering we really like!

We end up biting the bullet and tearing out a huge section of top flooring and the below plywood to expose the vintage flooring. We decide that that is a much better option than what we have now. Then after that, we can decide if we want to remove that to expose the wood floors. I’ll keep you posted…

  1. Love that floor! May it last forevah! Back in the 70’s, I had that pattern in red. The orange is much more cool. karen

  2. Who cares about the floor….. I’m just ecstatic to see a Christmas gift being used in one of those pictures!

  3. Lynn, I love your new found vintage flooring. The house I grew up in had the same flooring in the kitchen, bath room and utility room. Thanks for the fond memories.

    1. Cool. I was thinking people would comment that we’re both crazy for liking that old tacky flooring! I think it Rocks!! Thanks Joanne!

  4. Oh Lynn, that’s soooo way cool, brings back lots of happy memories because I’m old enough to remember putting that color linoleum in my kitchen when hubby built our first house! Same yellow, gold, brownish tile-like squares! And you are calling this “vintage”? Boy, does that ever age me! Enjoy your new-found floor treasure.

    1. Thanks Cathryn!! To make you feel even older, any item from the 80’s is now vintage as well! I believe 60’s is considered “antique” – Isn’t that terrible! I’m feeling old right next to you! We’re almost done ripping up old the old vinyl and plywood. Eric stood up and said, “I love this floor more because it will really hide all the dirt!”
