Dogs & Horseshoes Don’t Mix

All is complete in the world for Mr. Basketmaker right now. Why? Because he finally set up his horseshoe pit down here in Tennessee. And tonight he was ringing them around the pole. And yes, it does look sort of perfect… Eric tossing some shoes, Chance romping around with a toy in his mouth.

And it’s been a long time coming. I know Mr. Basketmaker has been champing at the bit (no pun intended) in getting his favorite outdoor game set up. He always had a horseshoe pit in his backyard up North at the old schoolhouse. But after we got married, our little tiny postage stamp of a yard in the city could not fit a proper setup. So it looks like our new place in Tennessee is feeling right like home for Mr. Basketmaker.  However, he quickly remembered how Chance and horseshoes do not mix.

Chance cannot comprehend that running after heavy metal objects thrown in the air is not a good thing to try and catch. Though we have been lucky, so far, in that he has not had one smack him in the nose hard enough to injure him, but after the horseshoe lands, he has attempted to grab it. But because of its weight, he thinks it’s being held down in the ground. So his instincts tell him to dig around it, then he can pick it up. But throwing up sand out of Eric’s newly made sandpits does not go over well. So it’s back to Chance being in the house when it’s game time. Just like old times… keep Chance away from the horseshoes.

    1. Thanks Donele. He’s six years old. We are still wondering when his “puppy stage” will be over and he transitions to a normal adult dog!
