A Day of Shooting.

While Mr. Basketmaker was teaching, I volunteered to help out a few of the basketmakers in taking some additional photographs for their annual calendar. There was about a dozen baskets to shoot and since it was a beautiful fall day here in Georgia, it was a great diversion from my usual freelance work.

It brought back some memories of my photography class in college where the professor reminded us constantly that out of one hundred frames you shoot, you will have one maybe two good images to work with. Hence, I ended up with over 500 photos taken! And he was right — I ended up with about 10 or 12 that I will finally submit.

Here’s a few of my pics taken earlier.

The above basket was made by Patti Patterson. The sun was shining perfectly when I got to this one and was able to capture a nice yellow and green glow behind the basket for a subtle, ethereal background. I like how the bottom corner of this mini basket looks like it’s illuminated from the inside.

This gourd basket was created by Gail Bice. This particular photo will most likely not be one of the images that make it in the calendar. But I took it more for myself. I’m thinking I may use it as a basis for one of my abstract paintings.

This sewing basket was also made by Patti. I was slowly losing the natural light and as we would soon find out, a rain storm was about to move in. But I think there was still enough light to get a good contrast along with some vibrancy that I originally intended.

  1. Speaking as one of the “calendar girls” we would be honored to have an outsider want one of our calendars. We give them as gifts to family and friends whether they want them or not! I also can’t wait yo see Lynne’s pics of our baskets

  2. I look forward to your every posting. Since I will never be there in person
You offer a small taste with humor of what goes on. I LOVE IT .
I have to be honest this one is a tease!!!! You must have taken so many more photos. PLEASE share them with us. Some of us may or may not
Look with the critical eye of a photography professor but that would be
Second only to the opportunity to view the amazing weaving and creative
Basketry we may never see unless you share it with us! ALSO please
Share the info needed to purchase a calender.. Keep up the wonderful
Blog and thank you very much for each entry.

    1. Thanks so much Jan for your wonderful comment! I will share more basket photos over the next couple weeks. There’s about 15 basketmaking ladies who put together a calendar of all their baskets… sort of a show and tell for the year. I think they will be printing extra this year since more people have been asking for them! I’ll be sure to let you know! -Lynne a.k.a., the basketmaker’s wife
