Back in November, I wrote a post titled “A Day of Shooting” detailing my day of being a photographer for the “Cottage Girls” of Georgia. (If you missed it, you can read it here.) I also shared several photos of some of the baskets I shot for their yearly calendar. I got a request to post more photos from this shoot, which I agreed to do, but sort of forgot! (Sorry Jan.) So I will try and remember to do so every couple weeks.
I had the pleasure of photographing some unbelievable work and talent! So I really need to share them with y’all! Sometimes I forget that I’m the Basketmaker’s Wife and skip writing posts about baskets in favor of talking about my slippers, my dog, my messy office, my fascination with our stray cow Betty-Sue… I need to get my act together!
The photos below are from basketmaker Gail Bice. She has taken many classes from Eric — most recently the one in Florida so it was nice to chat with her then. She also did a show-and-tell during a workshop of her pine needle baskets that I posted back in 2012. You can see that post here.
When shooting the baskets, I placed them in at least three different backdrops so there would be plenty of options for the calendar picks. This one, below, didn’t make the cut. It lacked some contrast and fell flat with too many grays and browns. Overall, a little blah.
I am fascinated with this 3-tier basket because if I was a weaver, and I was working on this project, I know I would’ve stopped after doing the first tier. Well, maybe I would’ve started the second tier but probably only about three or four rows. Then I would’ve added it to my “unfinished projects” bin.
This is the shot that was used for the month of November in the 2014 calendar and it looks fantastic. I have their calendar sitting right here in front of me and it came out great. Start getting ready for the 2015 issue ladies!
I want one!
Wow! That is an amazing basket! Eric how about one in Ash with Cherry wood? Beautiful!
I agree – this looks amazingly like it takes too much work. Does she use it?
Don’t know if she does. But I know I would use it! I use all of Eric’s baskets for all kinds of stuff… storing my socks, holding all the dog toys, a catch-all for my bureau… I use them all! Well, not his exhibit baskets of course.
hey… you did write in your header that this is “a blog about my art, my husband’s basketry craft and our dog’s silly antics.” So you’re allowed to skip posts on baskets!
Oh yeah… you’re right! Guess I will keep going with the mindless stories… 🙂
