Mr. Basket Maker Speaks: Fun Boy

The following post is from Mr. Basketmaker:

Because I didn’t answer the five questions Friday last week, my wife said my punishment was to write a Mr. Basket Maker Speaks. I said fine, so here it is.

First of all, getting the questions at 9:00 pm Friday night is not acceptable. That doesn’t leave me much time to protest any of the questions. Maybe I should get the questions on Thursday instead. (Since this is my blog, I have the last word and I sent you the the questions at 7:00 pm on Friday. And if I sent you questions on Thursday, it would no longer be Five Questions Friday!)

Anyway I’m on a rant that is not was this is about. Here is just a thought I had while looking out today. When we were in Manchester, New Hampshire we lived in a fairly citified neighborhood (citified is my word for living right in the city). And this means that our neighbors were real close. Really close! On one side of our home was a driveway you could only fit the width of your car in and if you didn’t park it just right you wouldn’t be able to wheel the city-approved garbage containers to the curb without hitting the car.

On the other side of our little house was another very close driveway. And this driveway was even closer to the house. We had a small guest bedroom that had a window that faced this driveway. When our neighbor drove in he could literally stop and knock on our window from his truck if he wanted to. And for our guests, it meant being awaken because you think someone is about to drive through the wall.

One day Lynne’s Mom stayed with us and was sleeping in that room. The next day, Lynne asked her how she slept. She said “If it weren’t for Fun Boy driving in late at night, it would’ve been fine.”  From that day on, we referred to our neighbor (between us) as simply “FUN BOY”. And Fun boy bought a new pick up truck that had one of those beepers when it backs up. And because the driveway is so tight, that beeping sound was very loud. And the night when my mother-in-law was visiting, he seemed to be going in and out several times that night. What he was out doing at this hour we can only speculate.

So early this evening after finishing the day’s work, I stood outside my workshop. All was quiet and as I took this picture, I was thinking about the people who bought our home back in New Hampshire and how lucky they are that “FUN BOY”, after about a year, finally removed that annoying beeping in his truck! They have no idea.

I enjoyed the years spent living in the city but am now grateful for all the space we now have, as you can see in the image, with only grass and trees on either side of our long, narrow driveway.

  1. I know it takes time to build up an audience soo was curious how long you’ve been running this blog page for? It’s really great,
one of the best I’ve browsed at so far. When you have any useful hints on how I may enhance my page, I’d really
    value your opinions. Thanks!

  2. How interesting to read more about your experiences and comparing city living to the country living. Both are certainly sources of entertainment here on our blogs.

We are in direct opposites in our lives right now, however! I am in the process of selling and moving from my 120 acre place in the country to the “citified life” in either Hudson, WI or Minneapolis, MN.

I’m used to moving around a lot, hubby and I have always had the wanderlust. But this one is a bit more difficult since we’ve lived here for eleven years now, and last year he passed away.

Tons of stuff to give to the kids and grandkids, donate to charities and of course, to sell. What a lot of work all that is! But I’m up for the challenge and am looking forward to this next big adventure.

Enjoy your quiet place in the cosmos, you two! I’m heading for an apartment or maybe renting a little house in town.

    1. Thanks for posting Cathryn! Yes, moving is always rough and stressful. I’ve moved around a lot myself. Country life is good right now. But I know later on, we would like to retire towards the city… so we would end up doing exactly what you are doing! LOL. Wish I lived closer… I would help you pack and sort through stuff. Keep me posted!
