For the past 8 years, in early September, I have been lucky to be a guest teacher for the Nantucket Historical Association on the island of Nantucket.
The NHA frequently sends out emails and most involve events and topics unrelated to my passion, baskets! However, I just got one this week highlighting one of the most iconic objects in the NHA’s decorative-arts collection: the lightship basket.
The email contained two videos and I thought this may be of interest to my fellow basket makers and wanted to share them.
The first video features a nice informative overview of Nantucket basket history and features modern day basket makers such as Nap Plank, Carol Lindquist, Michael Kane, and more.
The second video is a gem from 1975. It features the iconic Jose Formoso Reyes. It’s black and white and about 20 minutes long. I kind of am embarrassed to admit this, but I have never seen it. Anyway, it is worth checking out.

Bonus recommendation:
If you are still interested in more Nantucket History, particularly the whaling industry, then this 30-minute video from the Nantucket Whaling Museum is great.
