Our own ‘Sunflowers’ for Ukraine

Most know that Ukraine’s country flower is the Sunflower. My mom gave us this little canister last year to put on Eric’s porch outside the workshop.

Praying for Ukraine.

I have not stopped watching SkyNews, the BBC, ViceWorld reports including the live feeds from the Associated Press—everything you don’t see on our news. It’s absolutely horrible and devastating what millions of ordinary citizens are going through. Families are being torn apart with death from missiles in the country and at the border due to Martial law, while others stay to fight next to their husbands, fathers, sons, and brothers.

Seeing reporters post videos of children coming into the hospital’s makeshift bomb shelters and have died. Elderly people standing up to soldiers and Russian tanks. A grandmother confronting Russian soldiers to hand them sunflower seeds to put in their pockets. These countrypeople are so brave! It’s unbelievable to watch. But then sadness…tons of children with cancer are in bomb shelters who are not able to get their medications. Millions of pets left behind with children hugging their beloved dogs saying ‘bye.’ I’ve been watching a Ukranian teenager’s video posts on how her father is fighting and her sister just died from a shell attack and now they’re trying to get out of the country. It’s just horrible! Children should not have to go through this. Call me ignorant, but I don’t know how our country couldn’t intervene. It makes no sense to me at all.

However, I need to take a break—it’s so depressing. But on the other hand, it’s also shameful in a way on my part. I GET to take a break. I can shut it off. They cannot. They’re living it! And they did absolutely nothing wrong.

I really hope our country can figure out how to help them and stop all of this.

  1. It is horrible and evil. Thank you for putting in writing the shock and feeling of helplessness I know we all share. It helps to know we as a nation have not become numb to the suffering of others. Everyone pray that God shows us how to help them.

  2. I agree Lynne. I don’t know what can be done but I feel we do need to do something to stop the fighting/bombing now. The targeting of civilians is unbelievable. I am so distraught over this situation.

  3. The World needs to say “No More”, enough is enough to Putin and any other country seeking world domination.
