Saturday Night Art Walk: Mosaics

I am late tonight… again! Have good excuse… Eric whipped out his super-powerful telescope so we could view the full moon (Christy N. … I heard you were quite fond of Eric’s telescope when you visited him at the schoolhouse in New Hampshire).

Tonight’s theme: Mosaics.

What I’m drinking: Margaritas! Olé!

A few of the artists on my Pandora playlist: Townes Van Zandt, Tom Waits and Eva Cassidy (If you don’t know about Eva, google her — but be warned, it’s sad — her life was cut tragically short).

I’ve always been drawn to mosaics. Not sure why since I’ve never made a mosaic myself. But maybe because I approach my paintings in a similar fashion — piecing together different elements whether color, mediums or collage scraps.

If you’ve been to Pompeii, Italy, then you will most likely recognize these first two images. I could’ve stayed there all day, examining the different mosaics. I could only imagine what the original colors were way back when. That day was drizzly as well so I wasn’t able to linger as long as I wanted…

Both of these images were from the “House of the Faun” in Pompeii. I still have that tile floor image pasted on my “idea board” in my studio. I just love the random, odd shapes. It may seem like someone placed them haphazardly, but that’s not the case. I’m sure they spent hours and hours fitting the pieces together in a precise, visually appropriate way.

And here is a mosaic quilt I absolutely love. I don’t quilt but if I did, it would look more like this…

Above quilt is from Ellison Lane of Ellison Lane Quilts and I love it. I’m all about random placements and “non-comformity” so I’ve always been drawn to quilts based on an abstract vision.

    1. No. Eric told me you when he meant someone else! He did just turn 50 so doesn’t the mind and the memory start to go then?? LOL.
